As the dizzy feeling of love swelled within Fred's heart, it was
accompanied by a sinking feeling. Before he had left, his great-uncle, a
respected wizard, had pulled him aside and given him a prophecy. Looking
deep into Fred's eyes he said, "The key to killing the dragon lies not
within the power of your sword, but the power of your heart. You must
sacrifice your heart, for your heart is also the dragon's heart and to
kill the dragon, you must kill your heart."
Fred had thought that his great-uncle must be getting addled in the brain,
but then again, wizards were notorious for their obscure "advice".
But now, Fred knew without a doubt what he had to do.
Ignoring the dragon, Fred slowly reached his hand over his shoulder and
pulled his sword out from its sheath. The weapon let out a satisfied sigh
as it was freed from its confinement and taking deep breaths to strengthen
himself, Fred closed his eyes for a moment.
The dragon was staring at him with a glint in his eye, and hissed, "What
do you ssssink you're going to doooo, puny human?"
"Don't worry, dragon," Fred whispered, "this will hurt me more than it
hurts you." And turning swiftly away from the dragon before he could
change his mind, Fred imbedded his sword deep into his love's guts,
thrusting upwards as it cut through, finding her heart, and jerking the
blade out.
"Aaarrgghhhh!!!" The dragon appeared to have a fit of epilepsy, and before
Fred's eyes, a gaping hole opened where its heart would have been and
gushed out a stream of purplish blood. Its scales began to smoke and then
it crumpled into a pile of ashes.
