Once more the deserted road stretched on for quite some time with nothing in sight. Fred
started muttering unpleasantly under his breath. Astra made a few awkward attempts to make
conversation with Fred, but he ignored them. Velus whistled an annoying song off-key.
"Fred," Astra finally asked, "where is everyone? Though we stopped at a way-station of sorts some time ago, I've never seen anyone traveling this road." "You're right," said Velus. "This place is giving me the heebie-jeebies. And it's getting kind of cold..." "Perhaps there's no one in this world at all, apart from that ship which just left" said Fred. "Perhaps that's why the demons sent us here. It's very ingenious of them--why torture us when they can simply send us here to die, cold and alone." "You're not alone," said Astra. "You have me." She walked over to Fred and put her arms around his shoulder. And she was right. Even if Fred had no memory of the life she'd said they had together, it was good to have her here in this desolate place, not only because she was very beautiful. He was leaning in closer to her when they heard a buzzing and crackling noise in the distance and saw a shadow approaching cast by something high in the air. "What--what's that?" said Velus. As it grew closer they saw just what it was--a dirigible of the type once used in the earliest days of the Great Empire. It was also on fire. A small escape pod shot out of the dirible as it slammed into the gas station, creating an enormous firestorm. The pod crashed next to Fred, Astra and Velus, knocking them off their feet. "Well, it seems we're not alone anymore," said Astra. The escape pod opened to reveal...
