Astra examined the anklet carefully. Fred had thought that it was
perfectly plain. So it was on its outer surface, but she noticed that what
appeared to be runes had been inscribed on the inside and were still
faintly visible.
Neither she nor Fred could interpret the markings. This did not surprise them. After all, they were well aware that they were a very long way from home. "If this was made of gold or silver, then it would clearly be jewelry," Astra said. "But as it's made out of bronze, that seems unlikely. It doesn't seem to have been used as a restraint, since there is no indication of anywhere that a chain might have been attached to it. My guess is that it might have been intended to indicate status, most probably to mark out its wearer as a slave. The runes may have indicated who the slave's owner was." "In that case, why have them on the inside, where they couldn't be seen unless the anklet was removed?" "Yes, that is odd, isn't it?" "What does the snake think of the anklet?" "Let me ask him...
