"What? But that's impossible!" Belinda replied. Carola was naturally delighted by the news of Astra's escape, but she noticed that her sister appeared alarmed, even frightened. Doubtless if she later questioned her sister about this, she would say that it was merely an act put on for the guard's benefit, but Carola didn't think that it was.

"Apparently it wasn't impossible," the guard told Belinda. "But no doubt she'll be recaptured before long. Those who were supposed to be guarding her have already suffered the consequences. The dragon now has three more grotesques in his menagerie."

Then the man looked long and hard at Carola, before asking Belinda: "Why is your sister not in her cell?"

  1. "She escaped. Help me to take her back to her cell. But keep alert. She may look innocent, but she's highly dangerous." Carola's suspicion of her sister hardened into near certainty.
  2. "The dragon wanted me to bring her to see her sister punished," Belinda said. The lie made Carola wonder whether perhaps Belinda was on her side after all.
