Eventually the young lion seemed to realise that it would have a better chance if it went after one of the juvenile wildebeest rather than an adult. The young were not only slower but also easier to bring down when caught. It made its kill and fed for a while before, apparently satiated, it wandered off, ignoring Fred and Astra.

"The left-overs would have made a good meal for us, if only we had some way of carving it and cooking it," Fred said.

"I don't think that we can really expect the spirits to provide for us yet again."

  1. Nor do they.

  3. Astra hears the snake talking to her inside her mind. Apparently the Spirits have sent it to be their guide.
