Overheating

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 46522

Perhaps space itself was distorted inside this illusion of the dragon's, if that was indeed what this strange place was. By rights, Irena was much too far ahead of Fred for his despairing dive to come anywhere near her. But somehow his outflung right hand grasped her ankle, and they both fell full-length onto the golden flagstones.

The impact wasn't exactly comfortable for Fred, encased in armour as he was, but he was not hurt. Irena had been less lucky, however. She seemed to have banged her head and was unconscious. Fred bent over her anxiously. He hoped that she was not badly hurt and would quickly come round. The sooner the better, in fact, for it seemed to Fred that it was getting hotter all the time, as though all the gold that surrounded them was somehow radiating heat. Even Irena, though unencumbered by armour, was perspiring freely. When she came round, there would still be a problem, of course. With the gate closed behind them, how could they manage to escape before they were boiled alive?

  1. Irena's eyes fluttered open. "What happened, Fred?" she asked.
  2. Irena's eyes fluttered open. "What happened, Fred?" she asked.
  3. Irena's eyes flickered open. "You stopped me!" she said furiously. She scrambled to her feet, and ran off again in the direction in which she had been heading.
  4. Suddenly, Fred heard a familiar voice calling his name. In spite of the heat, for a moment he seemed to feel an icy chill.
