Towards the Xodarian City

Those from the Hitchhikers' universe are taken rather aback when the Champions remove a couple of rolled-up rugs from their packs and spread them out on the desert surface. Then the Champions sit on them. "Come on, we haven't got all day," Cuthbert says impatiently. "Trillian and Zaphod, come and sit on this carpet. Arthur and Ford, go and sit on the other."

They do as they are told. Then they are really given a shock when the two carpets climb into the air. "I don't believe it," Arthur keeps muttering to himself. "They're magic carpets."

The carpets head for the once beautiful but now ruined city visible on the horizon, since it is there that the tricorder readings indicate that the necessary crystal can be found. (It is lucky that they can still detect the crystal even when it is some way underground.)

Fortunately the two crashed battle fleets had been fighting on the far side of the city, and that was also where the two sides' ground forces had been in combat (though they have now been almost wiped out by the crashing fleets). So the carpets encounter no resistance as they approach the city. Even better, almost all the guards left in the city naturally have their attention focused in the opposite direction.

Of course, the Champions' luck cannot hold indefinitely, and when they approach the badly damaged palace of the Jed they come under fire from some of the palace guard.
