Since the corridor behind Carola came to a dead end a little way past the cell, she realised it could only be Belinda when she heard footsteps at her back. Fred, of course, was still paralysed. Belinda must somehow have escaped from the cell. Sure enough, when she turned her head she saw the tall, fair-haired figure of her sister, now only some ten yards away.

Carola knew that she couldn't outrun Belinda. She therefore had no alternative but to fight her. Carola was probably the more skilled in unarmed combat, but she would be conceding four years in age, three inches in height and at least twenty pounds in weight, so the odds would be heavily against her.

But to her surprise, Belinda held up her hand in the universally recognised gesture of peace. Carola tensed. She didn't trust Belinda one little bit. "What is it you want?" she asked. "How can there be any peace between us? You betrayed Astra and me. That knight, too."

  1. "It was all an act to fool the dragon," Belinda claimed. "Don't forget, I didn't kill the knight when I could have."
  2. "I just wanted you to know I'm not going to try to stop you, since you have no hope of freeing Astra. But if you get to make enough of a nuisance of yourself, perhaps you'll get to be tortured at her side. Won't that be nice?"
