"We can't stay here for long," Astra said. "Even if they don't think of
looking for
us up here, we have nothing to eat or drink. It will soon be dawn, so if
we are to have
the benefit of the cover of semi-darkness (though I wish the moonlight was
not so bright)
then we should try to escape now."
They managed to climb down from the top of the keep without being spotted, and went away into the fields. The corn would soon be harvested, and so was at its highest. However, it did not grow so high as modern varieties do, so they had to crouch to ensure that their heads remained hidden. Fortunately the men searching for them made a lot of noise, so they were able to steer well clear of them. The most dangerous times were those when they came to the edge of one field, and had to find their way through the hedgerow into the next field without being spotted. However, luck was with them, and they maged with nothing worse than a few scratches from twigs. For the first time since leaving their hiding place, Astra thought it was safe to speak. "Is there any other keep nearby where we could get help?" she asked Andrea. Andrea replied:
