Lord Fred saw a scruffy-looking pirate leaving a room as he ran up the stairs. "In here,"
whispered the pirate as he ran up the stairs, pointing to his room. "I'll handle him." He
winked broadly. Fred was dubious about accepting the pirate's aid, but didn't see much
other choice. He dived into the room as the pirates tramped up the stairs.
"Hello gentlemen," he heard the pirate say as the mob ran up the staircase. "What would be the matter with ye?" "Arr, some lily-livered landlubber whore-son stooge of the King has come in here and claimed to be a pirate," growled one of the pirates in the mob. "Now, let's be reasonable about it. I know we're all reasonable men, savvy?" said the pirate. "What makes him think he works for the King of hereabouts?" "He stole the hat of the Dread Pirate Lots!" squeaked another one. "No true pirate wouldn't respect him." The pirate who'd aided Fred clicked his lips and shook his head. "A real shame. I can't imagine where he'd go, but I'm sure I could help you find him." He flung open the door flamboyantly. "Do you know where he went, Freddy?" Fred's jaw dropped. "What is the meaning of this? I--" "See?" said Sparrow quickly. "He doesn't know either." "That's him!" shouted a coarse female pirate at the head of the mob. They all began to shout drunkenly. "Now, now," said the pirate aiding Fred. "If it were him, he would be running from you, wouldn't he?" "Well, urhmghn, maybe," said one of the pirates in the mob. "But he isn't, isn't he?" This question seemed to require some thought. The pirates scratched their heads. "Well, no," one of them finally said. "So he's not. It's that simple. I think he went that way," he said, pointing up the stairs. "I can't help you yet, because I have business, but I'll keep me eyes peeled." And with that, he slammed the door. Fred heard the mob charge up the stairs. "See?" said the pirate. "No trouble at all." "Thank you," said Fred uneasily, "but who are you, and why did you aid me?" "Why, I'm Captain Jack Sparrow!" said the pirate. "Surely you've heard of Captain Sparrow? Scourge of the Allarian Navy? Slayer of the dark wizard Vaeren?" "I can't say that I have, actually," said Fred. Sparrow looked disappointed. "Well, then. Perhaps there are some blighted backwaters in Allaria where people haven't heard the name of Captain Sparrow. But I'm sure the HighKing himself trembles at my name! But that's no matter. I saved your life because I had to give ye this." He handed Fred an earring. Fred picked it up uneasily. "Why did you give me this?" he asked.
