The constable walked up to them. "You have a friend, it seems," he told
them. "He has settled your debt with Bertha."
"The hooded man?" Fred asked. "That's right. It's odd, though. As soon as he had paid your debt, he went away... Now I advise you to leave. You are not welcome in this village." Melissa had been looking forward to staying the night in the inn and having a proper bed, but it seemed that it was not to be. Sighing, she followed Fred to the stables, where they collected their horse. (Fred had rejected out of hand the idea of selling him in preeference to being put in the stocks. A horse was essential in this wild country, where settlements were few and far between.) "So where are we going to find this 'safety' that you are supposed to be taking me to?" she asked Fred as they rode along. Sitting behind Fred on his horse wasn't really the ideal position from which to conduct a conversation. "What did you say?" he asked. "You'd have a better chance of hearing me if you didn't insist on wearing your helmet," she said. "I asked you where you were taking me."
