The hooded man walked through the crowd, full of presence and dignity.
When he reached Bertha, they began to have a heated argument which Fred
and Melissa couldn't hear over the jeering of the crowd. He then withdrew
a pouch from its cloak and showed the contents to Bertha. Her jaw
practically dropped off. She nervously pocketed the pouch, walked over to
the constable, and began to whisper to him. He nodded and ordered the
guards over and pointed them to the stocks. Reluctantly, they moved
toward them and unlocked them, pulling them out of the stocks. It
scarcely registered to Fred and Melissa for a moment that they were free,
having suffered under the burning sun and the hatred of the crowd for
several hours.
