The Unexpected Nursery

"Maybe they are the babies of women who are servants of the dragon?" Fred suggested.

The light from Astra's lamp had disturbed the slumber of the nearest baby. He - or maybe she - awoke and began to cry. This woke others, who also started crying. Soon most of the babies were screaming their heads off, making further conversation difficult.

Hearing the crying, a nursemaid entered the nursery from an adjacent room. "Who are you?" she asked, raising her voice so as to be heard. "And what are you doing here?"

Astra came up with the only excuse that she could think of. "One of these babies is mine. I just came to check up on him. This is my husband and our dog."

1. "I don't think so. I know all of the mothers of these babies, and none of them is in the habit of walking around naked with a dagger strapped to her thigh."
2. "I see. And which baby would be yours?"
