The scene was a shocking one - and a disturbing one too for Henri, who had
not thought that enemy scouts could have penetrated so far. After quickly
checking that the grizzly really was dead, they went over to the
two soldiers to see what they could do for them. It was immediately
obvious that one was dead; the grizzly had almost ripped his head from his
body. The other had lost a lot of blood from bad wounds in his left arm
and his right thigh. He was unconscious.
"If we can staunch the bleeding, I think that he might be saved," Henri said. "Your kind heart again?" Astra asked, as she used her knife to cut off the end of her sleeve. Then she took a crossbow bolt, and used it with the strip of material to create a make-shift tourniquet for the man's arm. "Partly, perhaps. But any information that we can get from him about the enemy's strength and plans could be very valuable." As he spoke, he was attending to the man's thigh wound. Meanwhile he had noted that this strange woman had been well able to cope with such a bloody scene, and seemed to know quite a lot of first aid. He went on:
