To get Fred's (more-or-less) undivided attention you had to tie him to a
stalagmite and wedge his head so he wasn't able to look anywhere except
straight ahead. Astra was to the side of him, just out of his line of
sight. To the side of you was a stand with a small blackboard on it. On
this
you had written the lyrics to Sinatra's Something Stupid. A title you
thought applied well to Fred in his current state. "Right," you say, trying to sound officious but failing miserably, "As you are aware, the Dragon wants the two of you to sing a duet. And I am to compose the music." You indicate the blackboard. "Here are the words to a song called 'Something Stupid'. Ideal duet material." You notice Astra appears to be reading the words with what you think is interest, while Fred just stares blankly. Ack! you think. Never thought he might not be able to read. As it turned out, you needn't worried. How are we supposed to sing a song with no music?" Astra eventually asks. "Oh, come on!" You protest. "With this one you don't need music to rehearse it. Let's hear you try it." Astra just shrugs indifferently, while from Fred there's no reaction. You realise that's because he's fallen asleep. Heaving a great sigh, you shake him awake then forcibly make him look at the blackboard. "See words? Sing words. Got it? Good." Making your way back to your position by the black board; "Right. After the count of three, you sing. A-one, two three..."
It takes many hours of practice, but you eventually get the two of them to learn the words off by heart. When they started, it was the first time you had ever heard Astra sing. Surprising, considering how often she's had to change her routines. Unlike Fred's original singing voice it was pleasant to hear. After the initial hiccups, the two harmonized well. Now, though, it was time for the ultimate test. Would the Dragon like it?
