Stacy realised with mounting annoyance that, with the disappearance of the
motel, she had lost not only her newly purchased nightie but - far more
serious - her copy of Betty's book, which she had left in her room. The
only thing to do was to walk back to the Array Operations Centre and speak
to Betty again. Betty couldn't very well pick her up later on from a motel
that no longer existed.
But she received another shock. The Institute of Mining and Technology campus was still there, all right, but the AOC building had vanished! Seeing a passing student, Stacy hailed him: "Hey, where's the AOC?" The student looked puzzled. "The what?" "The Array Operations Centre for the VLA." "The what?" This was getting monotonous, Stacy thought. "The Very Large Array - all those radio telescopes 50 miles out of town."

JH (to lose one radio telescope may be accounted a misfortune, but to lose a whole array of them looks like carelessness :)
