I engaged orbit around three thousand klicks, and subjected the planetary
surface to a more detailed examination. There was plenty of indigenous
life, but I couldn't detect any signs of intelligent life. I considered
that a shame. First contact with a new species! Still, I wouldn't have to
worry if they were friendly or not or whether I was likely to get blown
out of the sky. Of course, since I had no way of knowing where in the galaxy - assuming I was still in the Milky Way Galaxy! - I was, I had to consider this planet my home. Not a prospect I looked forward to. Where to set down the Astra, though? I wondered, scanning the terrain. Ideally somewhere close to fresh water and also materials to make a home. After a while I eventally found somewhere that could be suitable. Large continent on the southern hemisphere. Temperate forest bordering sizable freshwater lake and grassland. Both the lake and the forest teemed with life. I had several weapon storage lockers - emergency only, of course! - so hopefully would be able to deal with any hostile life there may be.
