Astra was so delighted that she grabbed Fred and hugged him. The broad-
brimmed hat which she was wearing to protect her bald scalp from the sun
fell off in the process. When she
eventually released him, he said after a moment to get his breath
back: "I'm so pleased for you."
Astra replaced her hat and said: "Thank you. And thank you for all your help and support. If I had had to face this on my own, I don't think that I could have coped." Fred felt rather uncomfortable with Astra's praise. He said: "Anyone would have done the same. I suppose that your hair will have to grow back in its own time, but now you can be confident that it will grow back." "Yes. I imagine that it will also take a little time for animal life to re-colonise this area. But now we can go back to the tribe, and tell them that it will be safe for them to return. We must do something that we forget about before, as well, and that's to see if we can find out where we are. Before we return, though, we ought to re-bury the skeleton of the explorer, and leave the place as near as possible as it was before we disturbed it." As they worked to replace the stones, Astra remarked: "From what we heard about the cause of death of the tribal leader who took the ring, it's lucky that I was bitten by that insect before I acquired the ring rather than afterwards."
