Perhaps the spirits had heeded the interpreter's wish, or perhaps it was simply because Astra was no longer wearing the ring, but she had a sound night's sleep, and woke up feeling much better than she had done for some days. When Fred awoke shortly afterwards, they discussed matters.

"Are you really certain that you want to do this?" Fred asked. "I'm not sure that I altogether trust Anbana. Maybe taking back the ring for a while would have some bad effect on you? Perhaps I could..."

Astra interrupted him. "If you were going to offer to carry the ring yourthelf, then that'th very noble of you, Fred, but I won't hear of it. If thomeone new pickth it up, I'm thure that they would be curthed. Much better that I thhould take it again. It'th very good of you to come with me, and I won't athk any more of you. Now let'th go and find Ngeha. We'll thee if we can get ourthelves thome breakfatht and arrange thome thupplieth to take with uth."

An hour or so later, they left the village.

  1. There was a boat to carry them across the river.
  2. They had to swim across the river once more, as the villagers never crossed it and had no boat. Fortunately their supplies had waterproof packaging.
