Lord Fred had been pondering Astra's surprising words: "Oh yes! Men find
great joy in
seeing the unclothed human form. I nearly forgot. It is not something I am
used to." Could even
a princess really be that innocent? He supposed things must be very
different in
Aqualaria from the lands that he himself knew. He hoped that her rather
touching naivety would not lead her into trouble
one day. Then he left off from his musing. Something didn't feel right
about the white
tunnel that they were traversing, though he couldn't tell exactly what. He
stopped, Could he feel a slight
vibration beneath his feet?
Then, with shocking suddenness, the tunnel broke away at its ends, rotated through ninety degrees, and flew off at high speed far above the river that raged below, heading upstream. The three adventurers were thrown to the floor by the jolt. The tube then began to tilt, until it was at about thirty degrees to the horizontal along its long axis, with the leading end being the higher. Fred, Astra and Velus desperately tried to prevent themselves sliding across the floor, since if they reached the rear end of the tunnel they would fall into the raging river below. "This can only be the dragon's sorcery. If his minions are watching us, we must be putting on a good show for them," gasped Fred, as he tried to jam his fingertips into a crack between two of the stone slabs that made up the floor. "Yes," panted Astra, "but if they hope to see us show fear they will be disappointed." The angle of tilt steadily increased to more than fortyfive degrees:
