Taking the Ferry

"I think it would be better if I went across first," Fred replied. "Just in case it's dangerous."

"But you are the dragonslayer. We can't risk having anything happen to you, for the dragon must be killed. Besides, with your heavy armour, if the 'ferry' dumped you in the water you would sink like a stone."

"Then perhaps Velus could... Velus?"

But Velus was hiding behind a convenient nearby rock.

Fred sighed. He didn't like the idea of Exotica going first. It wouldn't really help that she could swim, since the sheer sides of the lake would mean that if she fell into the water she wouldn't be able to get out. But he had never discovered how to win an argument with a woman, if such a thing was even possible. "Very well, Princess," he said.

So Exotica walked onto the platform, which immediately began to move slowly across the lake.

1. She reached the far side safely.
2. When the platform had reached the middle of the lake, it tipped her into the water.
3. Seemingly from nowhere, a thick fog suddenly covered the lake. Fred lost sight of Exotica.
