The Snark motioned for Fred to get into the carriage, then climbed in
after him, and
the carriage moved off. "What do you want with me?" asked Fred. "I will
tell you
tomorrow, after I have bought the woman," answered the Snark. "My plan
requires
both of you. For the moment, suffice it to say that I have a task for you
that is
too difficult, exhausting, dirty and dangerous to be suitable for anyone
but
slaves. The two of you look fit and strong enough that you might just have
a chance of completing
it." Not exactly encouraging, thought Fred.
After a short while, the carriage pulled up in front of a large mansion. Fred was taken inside and shown to a bedroom. "You will stay here until I have purchased the woman tomorrow," the Snark told him. Fred was left in the room, and he heard the door locked from the outside. He quickly determined that there was no means of escape; there were no windows and the door was a very substantial one. At least the room was quite comfortable. It even had an en suite bathroom. The next eighteen hours or so passed very slowly for Fred, except for the few hours of sleep that he managed overnight. Eventually:
