Another Day on the Force

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 42188

“Looks like it’s just you and me,” announced the Police captain, still intent on using the megaphone even though he was now face-to-face with the fugitive Fred. “You’ve really got it coming to you, the judge is going to throw the book at you this time.”

Fred waved a dismissive hand at the blue-clad officer. “You just want in on it. Well I’ve got news for you, buddy boy. I’m the star of this story. You’re just a minor character, at best. An errand boy. Do yourself a favor and get lost.”

“We’re not going into this again, Fred. Just because the story does tend to focus around you, doesn’t mean you’re above the law.”

“I’m a business man!” Fred raged. “You just want in on it! I’m the star! I do what I want! You’ll never take me alive, copper! See? M’ya! Never! M’ya! M’ya! See?”

“Fine with me!” the cop said smugly, putting down the megaphone. In it’s place he was now brandishing a tommy- gun. “Let’s see you corn your way out of this cream! Or, um, I mean...Let’s see you cream your way out of this corn! No, that’s not right either...”

“You can’t scare me with your fancy word-play, copper!”

“Then let’s quit talking and get down to business, Mr. Business Man!” And at that the cop began firing upon our hero until his every last round was spent. When the gunshots subsided, the riddled corpse of Fred lay sprawled amongst the globs of corn that had once been Extend-a-Story’s finest. It was over.

Late that night, the Police Captain wandered home, mulling over the day’s events. He had lost some of his most outstanding officers to the day's senseless violence and even though he’d finally taken down Fred it didn’t seem to ease the pain of such a loss.

He stumbled about in the darkness, cursing as he stubbed his toe on a chair, blindly feeling his way around for the light switch. He finally found it, and looked up to see his disgruntled old wife waiting for him on the couch.

“It’s 2:30 am!” she screamed in that horrible voice of hers, pointing to the clock mounted on the wall. “When is this shit ever going to end!?”

He threw his badge across the room.“Christ, Betty! It’s been a rough day! What the hell do you want of me!? I bust my ass every day for you! I put my life on the line for this stupid @%$#ing Story!”

She jumped to her feet. “What do I want!?” she roared. “I want my husband back! That’s what I @!#%ing want! I can’t keep doing this!”

“Doing what!? Lurking in the shadows, waiting for me to come home so you can pour salt in my wounds!”

“I want a divorce,” she stated calmly.

“Not now, Betty! Go to bed! We can talk this over in the morning. Don’t do this to me, not tonight!”

“I should have done this years ago,” she continued, her tone cold as ice. “You’re not the same man I married. Your job’s taken your soul. I just can’t do it anymore...”

  1. (yawn)Anyway, moving on, what happens to Fred in the afterlife?
