The mage seemed to be trying to answer, but his lips almost seemed stuck together. Astra,
her eyes still fixed on the ring, saw that the gems in the eye of the serpent, an ancient
Aquilarian symbol of wisdom, were glowing. A strong wind suddenly knocked Astra over,
blowing leaves all over the forest. The mage stared in mute horror as his body turned to
dust, which blew across the forest. His robes, the ring under them, fell to the ground.
After the wind died down, Astra stood up. What on Earth had caused that to happen? Perhaps the mage was simply a lesser mage serving an evil master, and he had killed his lackey rather than let information of his plans fall into Astra's hands. But why did the mage have her grandmother's engagement ring? She grabbed the robe and searched through it and the ground under it, but the ring was nowhere in sight.
