It was something that would have been easy to miss in any event, but even
more so since Minestus was naturally excited by the offer of Checkers to
teach Astra the basics of Old High Dolomite. That would mean that he could
learn the language himself through his "tapping" of Astra. Indeed, his
great experience with a variety of old languages, something that he
naturally had acquired as a mage, would probably make him a much more able
pupil than Astra.
Furthermore, if Checkers could be persuaded - or forced if need be - to copy out all of the poems without reciting them, then he would have them all available. In any case, now that he knew that they were there, but hidden, he was sure that he could if necessary find a way of making them visible to himself even without Checkers' help. Astra did not notice that the charm had been broken either. But Checkers, with the book right in front of her for her copying, soon spotted that the pages had mysteriously come unstuck again. "I can recite you the rest of that poem now," she told Astra, and without waiting for a response she began reading the remaining few lines. Minestus, his pleasant thoughts suddenly interrupted by Checkers' remark, ordered Astra: "Say 'Deny' now! Never mind waiting for the right moment!"
