Fred had much to ponder, and a journey of several days accompanied by only
his squire - who knew not to break in on his thoughts unnecessarily -
should offer an ideal opportunity. So he decided to leave immediately,
without even waiting to say goodbye to Astra and Checkers. He told himself
that he did not wish to disturb their sleep, though in truth he would have
been rather uncomfortable saying farewell to Astra whilst keeping
something so important a secret from her.
For he felt that he could not yet tell her about his conversation with Belboz. First, he had yet to make up his own mind about whether he could accept the mage's offer. Second, as Belboz had pointed out, it was not unlikely that Astra would object to it. Third, he might be raising her hopes only to have to dash them later, if Rowena should prove unwilling to become Belboz's apprentice. When Astra awoke, she was surprised and a little hurt to discover that Fred had left without saying goodbye. To add to her unhappiness, without his presence to moderate Belboz's behaviour, she felt more at the mercy of the mage than ever.
