Before Vincent transported Fred and Astra back to the caves, they had
donned the armour that he had provided. Fred's was conventional chain mail
(plate armour was too heavy to be practical in the environment of the
caves). Vincent had previously mentioned that Astra would require less
armour because of the toughness of her skin. Like Fred, she wore chain
mail, but her arms and legs were left bare, apart from her feet for which
she had leather boots. A sword-belt with scabbard and a helmet adorned
with two horns completed her outfit; when she was given the latter, not
for the first time she wondered if Vincent was mocking her.
Next the pack, weighing about fifty pounds, was strapped to her back. They took up their swords and sheathed them. They left their shields in the pack for now, since if they needed to climb they would want both hands free. Evetrything now being ready, Vincent waved his hands. The two of them found themselves in what was a familar location to Fred: outside the two entrances to the caves on the Allarian side of the Shreken mountains. "Last time, I went left," he told Astra. "Let's see what Vincent's map suggests." They unrolled the map and examined it. It was immediately obvious that it was far better than either Fred's or Astra's original map had been.
