The Never Ending Quest - Episode 41613

"So... anyone got a light?" Fred said, taking a cigar out of his rumpled beltpouch.

"Look, Boss!" one of the Blue-Cloaks chuckled menacingly. "It wants fire!"

"Ho ho ho!" the other Blue-Cloak laughed inhumanly. "Let's give him some voice!"

"But does it have any respect for us? Let's ask him!"

Fred watched in discomfort as the Blue Cloaks' shadows on the walls of the carriage seemed to shift and morph into montrous shapes. Watching their faces, he saw something strange taking place - a curious distension, or perhaps even a mutation playing across their mirth-twisted lips.

"OK!" Fred said, the cigar falling out of his mouth. "I think I need a bathroom break!"

He rose from his seat and started toward the door when something grabbed his leg. The entire compartment erupted in a howling, laughing, shrieking cacophony. Fred threw himself through the door, kicking off the creature on his leg. Somehow he got hold of the carriage and climbed up to the top. The carriage flew down the road at a terrifying speed, as a driving rain fell overhead. A monstrous half-human beast scurried up the side of the carriage after him. For a second they faced each other, the beast giggling and spitting viscous fluid. More of them were climbing up the carriage, their blue cloaks still fluttering in the breeze.

"Damn it!" Fred swore, drawing his sword. "This is too much! Impersonating Blue-Cloaks... have you no self-esteem?!"

The beast roared and lunged. Fred chopped out, cleaving it into two shrieking pieces, that flew off the carriage. Fred heard another one coming up behind him. He spun around - not fast enough - its ichor-stained teeth were an inch away from his face, and then Skye swooped into it, knocking it off the carriage. It fell to the ground, shrieking and rolling.

"Thanks, Skye!" Fred said, stabbing another one in the face.

"Don't mention it. Just save the chick!"

"Tarsa... right!" Fred clambered to the front of the carriage, chopping through Valmarspawn. He leaned over and banged on the door, yelling "Tarsa! The Pope's an impostor! Get out of there!"

  1. "Help me, Fred!" he heard Tarsa scream.
  2. "I know, Fred. Everything's allright." he heard her say calmly.
  3. But there was only silence from inside the carriage.
