Belboz's Spell

"That's what these chairs are for. Put down the stack that you are carrying." Fred did so, and Belboz put down his own stack. "At least I can draw my sword now," Fred said. "But what spell can you cast on the chairs that will help us?"

"You'll see," Belboz said. He made some gestures and recited a few arcane words, but nothing obviously happened to the chairs.

Meanwhile the monster, after a brief hesitation, started to move towards them. Withdrawing behind the two stacks of chairs, Fred and Belboz readied their swords, and Astra bared her teeth.

The monster swung its arms at the stacks, intending to brush them aside.

1. And so it did. Whatever Belboz's spell had been, it seemed not to have worked.
2. But when its arms came in contact with them, it convulsed in agony, as if the stacks were electrified.
