Velus led Astra into a large cavern. The smell was overwhelming as they
neared, and when they got inside, Astra saw why: animal droppings were
everywhere. Oddly enough, there were no animals to be found.
Velus was confused. This was were all of his friends and neighbors who had been turned into beasts resided. It was where the Mayor had sent him to find a noble warrior. But now, it was abandoned. Nary a creature could be seen, including Velus' beloved Aurora, who had also been turned into a small dog. A parrot flew down from its hiding place on the roof of the cavern. "Squawk! You're too late! Squawk!" "Are you talking to us?" asked Astra. "Yes!" He turned to Velus. "Is this the best you could find, a stupid woman?" Velus shrugged, or at least made the best dog approximation of a shrug. The parrot spoke to Astra now. "I am the Mayor. Our entire village was taken prisoners by the Dragon, and turned into animals. We sent this lad here to find help, but he's brought you too late. The Dragon has taken everyone away to work as slaves in his mines far below." Astra pondered. The animals in the mines would make fine allies against the Dragon. On the other hand, perhaps they would be easier to save if the Dragon was slain first.
