"Yes, it's me, Fred. Can you understand me? Can you use your scissor-hands
to pick the lock on that door?"
A slight smile appeared on Fred's face. "Astra!" he said. But he gave no indication of having understood her question, so she repeated it, more slowly this time. This time, when she had finished he said: "Door." "Yes, the door, Fred. We need to open the door." Her hope of being able to get him to understand any moderately complex idea was rapidly fading. She hoped that whatever had been done to render him so stupefied would eventually wear off. It was heartbreaking to think that he might remain like this. Still, at least he had retained just enough awareness to know that Vincent was his enemy and to free Astra herself from her leg restraints.
