Let the Games (at least formally) Begin!

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 40486

The door slid back to reveal a man who appeared to be made of fire. He burst into laughter upon seeing the figure of the two women, an evil air about him as thick as the black smoke that choked the passageway beyond the door. His mischievous yellow eyes held some hidden malice, and neither woman could look directly into them without shuddering. He clapped his hands in mock approval of their progress.

“Silly little whores,” he said at length, the smirk on his face vanishing. “I hope you are enjoying the game thus far. You certainly are persistent.”

Astra’s spirits sank. She had encountered this presence before, and it had not been a pleasant ordeal.

The man seemed to sense the princess’s thoughts. “Cheer up, my dear Astra!” he snickered. “At least your not chained to that cold wall like some kind of common criminal anymore! It’s been a dull season, here in my Mistress’s Dominion, and I’m glad you’re both here to amuse her. I think we’re really going to have some fun, you being her playthings and all. She tends to go through her toys at an almost alarming rate, and it's hard finding good replacements.”

Astra gritted her teeth. “This coming from the dragon’s own court jester! You are nothing but a mouth piece and a tool for that serpent!” she raged.

That comment almost seemed to strike home, for the man’s cockiness seemed to dissipate for a moment. An angry look came over his face, but quickly passed. “And still as feisty as ever, I see!”

“Who are you!?” Shen Tso demanded, though she was hardly in a position to do so.

The man peered at the golden mass above Astra’s shoulders, and began laughing again. “I think, perhaps, you should ask yourself the same question,” he spat. “An addlebrained knight in a form that is not rightly his, I think. My Mistress has taken some offense to this, but it’s really almost comical. No doubt the work of that sniveling little rat who plagues my Mistress’s doorstep.”

This, of course, confused Astra greatly. “What’s he talking about, Shen Tso!?”

“I’ll explain later,” Shen Tso replied glumly. “Let’s just say it has to do with the complex magic I told you I was subject to.”

“WELL!” the man exclaimed abruptly. “Enough dilly-dallying. It really has been a pleasure talking with you, but the show must go on. My Mistress is a fair sport, and figured you might as well know that she’s been on to you for some time, coaxing you onward with those useful, albeit sometimes decidedly corny, plaques of hers. You can expect more of them. They are her way of leveling the playing field and gauging your 'intelligence'-” he suppressed a chuckle, “-you might say. Giving you a 'fighting chance', you know. And if you have any brains at all, you'll do well to continue to take heed of them. Ignoring them could prove disasterous for you. But you are free to do as you will.”

And with that, the man drew the smoke around him like a cloak and disappeared. In his place there now stood a four-headed hound, dark-green in color, with a long braided tail. Each snarling head was dominated by a set of massive jaws, with gleaming and almost metallic looking teeth barred menacingly. The monster lunged at them without wasting any time.

  1. Astra/Shen Tso was able to dodge away just in time...
  2. One of the heads lashed out and caught Astra's midsection, sinking it's teeth deep into her golden armoured flesh(?)...
