Meanwhile Fred was looking at Astra open-mouthed. The gown that she had worn before her latest change was clearly no longer appropriate, and Vincent had replaced it by shorts and a halter top, so that the extent of her transformation was immediately obvious. "Astra, is that really you?" he asked. "Dr Vincent told me that he had 'improved' you, but I never dreamt..."

"Yes, it's me," Astra rasped, suppressing an irrational urge to blame Fred for her predicament. "I don't know if he's told you, but I have sworn a binding oath to be his servant. It was the price for getting my arms back, which he had amputated." She decided not to mention that she had also arranged Fred's own restoration as part of the deal. She didn't want him feeling beholden to her.

She turned to Vincent. "What you haven't yet told me, Doctor - or should I say 'Master'? - is what sort of work you want me to do for you."

1. "You will be my lab assistant, nurse, housekeeper, cook and cleaner. In fact you will do all the tasks that are beyond the capabilities of Bobo."
2. "I need a lot of steel for my projects. Your strength will be put to good use working in the mine from where I get the iron ore and also in my foundry."
3. "I want you to be Bobo's playmate. I think he's been a little lonely since Koko passed away a few months ago."
4. "I have a special project for you."
