Astra and Carola made it across the rope bridge. Belinda made it across
with seemingly no effort. But Fred was too heavy for the bottom rope to
support. It snapped when he was halfway across, leaving Fred dangling by
his hands. Still, he used his upper body strength to haul himself the
rest of the way across the chasm.
"Guess there's no going back now," Astra quipped as Fred made it to the edge, exhausted. His arms burned and his hands were raw from the rope burn, but with some bandages in his pack and a little rest he was good enough to move on. As they continued down the passage, they were stopped by a large group of menacing-looking dogs. Carola pulled a milk bottle out of her pack and threw it into their midst, killing most of them with a well-aimed explosion. Belinda took out two more from long range, and Fred and Astra hacked their way through the rest. The first combat was a success, with only minor wounds on Fred. They continued down a narrow corridor, single file, making sure to remind each other not to touch any of the jewels that sat on pedestals just off the path. One wrong step, one act of greed, and who knew what would happen? The corridor broadened, and they were able to assume a better defensive position of a diamond, with Astra in front, Belinda and Carola on the sides, and Fred at the rear. Another few beings tried to do their worst against the group, but they repulsed these threats with ease. Eventually, the corridor opened onto a grassy plain, where they discovered some plants Carola claimed could be combined with clay to form a poultice, and picked some of them. After fending off a few more isolated attacks, the group came to a cliff with four ropes hanging from the edge. Astra tugged on the first rope and barely got out of the way as what appeared to be a cannonball came crashing down. She tugged again, and jumped back, relieved that a second cannonball did not come down. She then climbed up the rope to the top, a distance of about twenty feet, and the others followed, one at a time, not wishing to test what might happen if they tried one of the other ropes. After a few more steps, they came to a sign that said, "place hand here." Astra placed her right hand where the sign indicated, and a scroll dropped from the sky. Level 1 Completed Astra +1 Agility, +2 Vitality Belinda +3 Agility Carola +1 Agility, +1 Magic Fred +3 Strength, -1 Agility To advance to level 2, pass through the portal. As Astra finished reading, a blue portal appeared out of nowhere. After asking whether people were ready, Astra passed through, followed by Belinda, Carola, and finally Fred. After what seemed like a few seconds, they found themselves...
