Beyond the door was a corridor narrow enough that they had to walk in
single file. Astra went first, Carola second, then Belinda, and finally
Fred, trying not to let his attention wander too much to Belinda's
athletic shorts-clad backside and her long, shapely legs.
They had not gone very far when Astra called: "Halt!" Just ahead of them the passage was crossed by a wide chasm, some fifty feet across. From somewhere far, far below came the sound of an underground river. Two ropes crossed the chasm, one at the same level as the floor of the passage and the other about four feet higher up and offset slightly to one side. The ropes were attached to metal pegs hammered into the rock. "It's clear that we are supposed to cross by walking across on the lower rope whilst using the upper one to steady ourselves," Astra said. "This will most easily be done barefoot. I suggest that we take off our boots or shoes and stow them in our packs. We'll go across one at a time, so as not to put undue strain on the ropes, though they look strong enough."
