As if the captain had been tempting fate, however, within twenty-four
hours the ship was being lashed by a gale that all the sailors said was
one of the worst that they had ever experienced. The girls were miserable
(as indeed was everyone else). They now had being thrown about and
seasickness to contend with, as well as the callouses on their hands from
their sewing. Only cold food was available, since it was unsafe for the
cook to have a fire alight in these conditions - not that anyone felt much
like eating - and it was impossible to sleep when night fell. The sails
had to be taken down for, even if the girls' sewing had been able to
withstand the wind, the complete sails would have been torn away from
their stays and lost.
The storm raged for over a day.
