The clothes that Gilder had provided were not at all suitable for tree-
climbing, so before climbing out of the window Astra had kicked off her
shoes and stockings, and had removed her gown and stays. Clad only in her
drawers and undershirt (unfortunately they were white, which would
increase the risk of her being seen), she quickly climbed down the tree,
meanwhile considering her options once she reached the ground.
She had gone for walks in the grounds with Gilder, so she had a fair idea of the layout. Heading in the opposite direction from the guard who had remained at his post would not only reduce her chance of being seen but would also take her out of the main courtyard and into an area that was kept as a flower garden. There were a number of substantial shrubs there that would provide her with cover should she need it. At the far end of the garden she would come to the outer wall, which she hoped she would to be able to scale.
