Fred couldn't believe his ears...or his eyes...or his nostrils. What had
just happened?!!? He sat down upon a stone within a cavernous corridor
and pondered. He recalled his summoning by King Emry, and then the Day of
Departure with all the music and dancing and feasting. It took over
twenty days to reach the foothills of the Shreken and then some more to
locate the cave...the damnable cave! Fred clearly remembered entering,
discovering the dog and then the woman, and then being transported by the
dog to somewhere where he turned into a cursed beast! And then he wasn't
there at all but in some bizarre room trussed up like a criminal with a
madman. And now he found himself back in the Southern Caves.
~~am I mad?~~ he thought. ~~nah!~~ He had a mission to accomplish; to kill the Dragon... who might be a wizard... or a hellhound. Whether the words of the madman held true about lycanthropes was not Fred's concern, killing the Dragon was... or was the blood curse of greater import? Fred shook his head, he just wasn't sure. There's not much time for this the madman had said. the dragon guy you've been battling... He's been creating were-creatures like crazy. And it's upsetting the balance of the universe... You know what I'm talking about... There won't be any Jack-Nicholson-as-a-werewolf stories anymore... One guy at MIT thinks they'll explode with the force of an atomic bomb. Now...you're going back to the dragon's caves. Forget about the ravaged fields and the harrasing of soilders. You have to kill the dragon before the whole metaphysical universe goes ka-blooey Fred couldn't shake the words of the madman. He also couldn't shake the desire to know more of what he was speaking about. He knew of the Dragon, he had met him only moments before in the form of a dog, but who was Jack Nicholson and what was MIT??? Fred shook his head again. It didn't matter, the only thing that mattered was killing the Dragon.
