The bridge that once spanned the river was gone, smashed to bits of wood
and a couple of stone pylons close to the farther shore. The four dwarven women gazed at the river in varying degrees of frustration and despair. For as far as they could see, it was about a quarter-mile across. Swimming such a distance would have been quite a feat even if they had still been human - in their present condition, it would be a Herculean task. "So," Frederica said, "What now?" "Well," Astra sighed, "we walk the banks until we find an intact bridge or a place narrow enough for a dwarf to ford the river." "There may be another way," Paula said. "The chest's empty, right? I imagine it would support the four of us if we chose to sail across on it." "How could we guide it, though?" asked Frederica. "We could find or chop down some branches and pole along," Paula said. "Otherwise, it might take many extra day to get to the King's court."
