When the girls estimated that that three or four hours must have passed by, they began to get worried. "Surely if the ship was going to be searched, it would have happened by now?" Sigourney said. "It must be after midnight. Why has nobody come for us? I'm getting hungry and thirsty. And I'm tired of sitting in total darkness."

"I've got cramp in my left leg from sitting in such cramped surroundings," Thelma complained.

"And I desperately need to pee," Louise said.

"Let's open the lid, climb out and investigate," Sigourney suggested.

"We'll have to climb down," Louise pointed out. "Bodgil removed the ladder so it wouldn't give anyone who might search the hold the idea of looking in the crates. We'll have to be very careful, as even outside the crate it will probably be pitch black, and - with this crate being the top one of four - falling could be very nasty."

  1. They succeeded in getting out of the crate, and then out of the hold and up on deck.
  2. They succeeded in getting out of the crate, but found that the hatch down into the hold had been secured from above, so that they were unable to get up on deck.
  3. In climbing down from the crates, Thelma fell and badly sprained her ankle.
  4. They got out of the crate - and then heard voices from up on deck.
