The Truth - But Not the Whole Truth

So Belboz explained what had happened to Fred, and therefore naturally had to tell him Cecilia's story as well. However he put a rather different gloss on events, so that he would appear in a more favourable light. He pretended that he had turned Cecilia into Fred to protect her, rather than as a result of a commission from Rogell to get the princess out of the way. He also told Fred that he would be helping Cecilia to thwart Rogell, but without mentioning that his price for this would be her hand in marriage.

When Belboz had finished, Fred was silent for a while, stunned by what he had been told. No-one other than Cecilia and Belboz now knew that he existed (and there was a sense in which he didn't really exist as an independent entity), or that he had ever existed. He now had no family or friends, no-one who would even recognise him. And his quest was meaningless, for there was no dragon.

Meanwhile Cecilia:

1. Said: "I think that there are a couple of points where I need to correct you, Belboz. You haven't been entirely honest with Fred."
2. Held her peace. It might not be wise to tell Fred about Belboz's lies whilst he was present.
