Run Wild, Run Free

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 391

As Fred and Alicia talked together, Fred couldn't get over her wondrous shape. And he knew he looked no less bizarre. They weren't human, they weren't foxes. They were human foxes. Staring at her reminded him of the March Hare from 'Alice in Wonderland' and the donkey-boys from 'Pinocchio'. He wasn't sure whether he should laugh or cry.

He never noticed the moon, bright and round, rise above the skyline in the distance. Atleast not until Alicia said, "But first, there's a full moon out tonight..."

Fred felt his skin tighten and his bones tremble. He was no longer focusing on Alicia; he wasn't focusing on anything. As if a fog had rolled into his mind, his thoughts lost all distinctness. The world around him seemed as if it were very far away. Only his body was real, and even that was somehow detached from him. He dropped to the ground, settling on all fours. His back seized up, growing longer, more horizontal. His arms and legs stretched and realigned themselves. His hands and feet lost any hint of human shape, curving out into thick paws. When he raised his head and bayed at that pearl-like orb in the sky, even his eyes were no longer his own.

He was a red haired, smiling fox. And so was Alicia. Large foxes to be sure; man- sized foxes. But animals through and through with not even a memory of their human past. Running through the woods, Fred and Alicia laughed in their joy, as animals often do. Everything was alive around them. They could see it, they could smell it, they could feel it. And it was good to be alive.

But as they reached the crest of a sloping hill, they suddenly stopped. A shadow crouched on the top of that hill. A shadow of a wolf. A wolf too big to be just a wolf.
