The Village

On the way, Alicia breifed him on the essential things he needed to know while living in the village. Why she assumed he would be staying, Fred didn't know.

To begin with, it was custom to use first names, despite any titles one may have held or currently holds in the village. One would understand if one's eyes were caught by a paticularly beautiful specimen of the opposite sex but it was rude to stare. Everyone is expected to participate in the council meetings and help out when needed. But what you grow is your own, what you make is your own and your personal life is basically your own business. Don't pry, unless invited. And finally, there are well-constructed cells for any morph who may not want to run...ah, wild, when the mood overtakes him or her.

Fred found the rules a bit odd, but he listened well. He obviously was going to have to deal with these people for a short while and he wouldn't want to offend.

Alicia led him through a break in the trees and pointed up the side of a foothill. Draped over the top like a well-worn blanket was a sturdy looking village. Fred noticed the only trees on the mountain were in the village itself. A great place to defend. A few acres of land near the houses were terraced, providing ample farmland.

"A great place you people have for yourself. Though I do have a question before we go any farther." Fred's hackles were raised, literally and figuretively. "Why do you act as if I'm going to stay?"

1. Alicia frowned. "They really pulled the wool over your eyes back home, didn't they? Everyone knows morphs are hated and reviled. Despite their obvious intelligence, they just aren't considered human."
2. "Well, it's not like you could ever leave the island and live." Alicia says.
3. "You mean, you really don't understand? Okay, listen carefully..."
