The witches then commanded Toby to dig up the rest of the graves, but no
other bodies were discovered.
They then headed back to their stronghold which was found somewhere deeper
within the Dragon's
Caves. Toby followed the three witches obediently. He had no other choice
for he had no will of his
own. He was dead, and had been dead for some time. But the medallion that
hung round his neck made
such a petty thing as death irrelevant for it filled him with a new kind of
life. Or rather un-life. For
zombies were anything but alive.
When the three witches arrived at the shadow haunted abode of the Coven of Sekete they found Mother Abigail waiting for them. Mother Abigail was an ancient and grotesque woman; a wrinkled hag with hair like bristles and a mouth of yellowed fangs. And she was the leader of their Coven. They reported everything that had happened to them and were then dismissed. Mother Abigail was happy to see the new zombie that had joined the ranks of their slaves, but the fact that the other graves had been emptied troubled her. It meant that the bodies had been taken by the witches' enemies and Abigail would rather have seen the dead men destroyed than join the forces of those that stood against her Coven. Unfortunately there was nothing she could do about it; the three missing bodies and that fifth knight were now beyond her reach. Looking beyond her losses though, Mother Abigail mused on the fact that the Grave Digger had been so busy of late. And these were knights that he had attended to. She rightly assumed that the Dragon had gone on another one of his rampages and that the above-grounders wanted it stopped. The witch laughed. No above-grounder could ever stop the Dragon. Just as no below-grounder could. But at least it meant that more knights would surely follow in the steps of the last five, and Abigail intended to make sure that the Coven would intercept them all. Abigail then called for Belasandra, the Coven's Mistress of the Pact. Belasandra was Abigail's most trusted friend and it was she who was heir to the Coven when the time came for Abigail's spirit to be cast out from the mortal world. Though not as old as Abigail, Belasandra was not much more attractive. But she was powerful, and that was all that mattered. "Send Embeth to watch the Chamber of Graves," Abigail told Belasandra. "Send Hannah and Ilyana with her." "Yes, Mother," Belasandra replied. "And tell Desdemona to go to Gundra's Cliffs," Abigail continued, "We need more mushrooms. We don't want the Wild Pack thinking we've forgotten about them, now do we. Farrah and Gladys will go with her and she can take five zombies." Belasandra nodded and did as she was told.
