Soon our heroes were surrounded. Then the ring of fuzzballs around them
gradually tightened. "We'll have to try to break through the ring before
they get within biting range," Fred whispered.
He wasn't sure why he was whispering. After all, these were surely dumb - though apparently ferocious - animals. Not that dumb, though; their hunting tactics suggested a degree of intelligence. "With luck, we can take them by surprise," Alex responded. Then, to their astonishment, one of the fuzzballs spoke:
