"Though I might be forced by my oath to ignore any maltreatment of
Checkers, Fred wouldn't stand for it," Astra pointed out. "And since my
oath to you was made in order to save his life, I should consider it to be
rendered null and void if you were to do any serious harm to him in order
to prevent him from intervening."
"I should not consider your oath to be void in those circumstances. But you need not fret on that score. Remember that I mentioned sending out Fred on a task that will take some time. That will keep him from being aware of what will happen to Checkers if your own efforts should fail." "But is he well enough to go off on his own? What did you have in mind?" "He would not be on his own, but would have his squire with him to ensure that he does not over-strain himself. Since Fred's original horse will never be recaptured now, and the horse that the squire is bringing will not suffice to transport all of us, I am going to suggest that Fred goes with his squire to the nearest village to get us more horses. The trip there and back ought to keep Fred away for long enough for my purposes. So will you comply with the terms of your oath, my bondswoman, and do as I have asked?" Astra scowled. "It seems that I have no alternative, since I do not wish any harm to befall Checkers." "Good... I have finished doing the laundry, and all the clothes are clean and dry. You can put your skirt and blouse back on now.... Don't turn your back on me like that. That's not at all a polite thing to do to your master." Fuming, Astra turned back to face Belboz. Then she let her towel fall and got dressed as quickly as she could.
