Manathus Reveals the Chains' Magic

Astra looked down at her chains. They were obviously too strong to be
broken by human strength alone, and she didn't think that Fred's sword
would have been much help if he had actually struck the chains back in
the Caves. Maybe Velus sacrificed himself for this, she thought.
Maybe we need to repay him for what he did. No, first things first, and that's getting these chains off. "So these chains, where did they fit into your plan?" Manathus was busy talking to Fred. He didn't even notice Astra was listening until she rudely interrupted him. "Well, to answer the question, your majesty, I created those thoralium chains for you because my original plan was to force you to marry me, thereby gaining access to the throne of Aquilaria. But then, when Lord Fred showed up, it got me thinking. Do I really need to become king to implement my programs? And I decided that being court mage would be just as good, as long as I could control whoever was on the throne. And besides, no self-respecting noble would accuse Lord Fred of inheriting the throne through deceit." Manathus pulled out a similar length of chain from his robe. Looping it around Astra's chains, he proceeded to attach it to Fred. "Now, Astra, will you accept my offer to marry King Fred and become Queen of Allaria and Aquilaria?" "Yes," Astra felt herself say. It was obvious that whatever magic this evil wizard-dragon had put into her chains was beginning to take effect. "And Fred, do you accept my offer to marry Queen Astra and become King of Allaria and Aquilaria?" "Yes," Fred said. As he said that, he felt the mud- encrusted armor leave his body. He too was now stark naked. "Well, time to fix things now," said Manathus. With a quick snap of his fingers, both Fred and Astra were clean, groomed, and in clothing much more fit for royalty. More importantly, though, the chains were gone. Or so they thought. "Actually," said Manathus, "your chains are still there. I've taken the liberty to turn them into invisible, indestructible elastic, so you will have no trouble moving around as long as you stay within a close distance of each other. Goodbye, my puppets. I'll be back tomorrow to perform the marriage ceremony and make your reign official."
