What had happened, Fred wondered. An attack by an enemy army? Or could the
devastation have been wrought by the dragon? If so, then it was hardly
surprising that this reality's Astra had been sent on her quest. But why
had the castle itself been spared? From his position, he could see a
substantial proportion of its outer wall, and there was no sign of the
damage that might have been expected if the castle had been under siege,
Not knowing what else to do, he stayed where he was, and after a while Astra came and found him. The transformation she had undergone in so short a time was remarkable. She was clean and dressed, wearing an elegant long white gown and matching slippers. Her hair had been brushed, combed and put up, held in place by a silver clasp. Fred smelt a hint of perfume and there was a little rouge on her cheeks. "I almost didn't recognise you," he said. "With my clothes on, you mean?" Astra teased. (Not that they were her clothes, strictly speaking.) "Not so much that, as the sort of clothes that you are wearing." "I may be a warrior at heart, but when at court there are standards that I am expected to conform to. Actually, I rather enjoy dressing up from time to time." "What do you make of that?" Fred asked, with a wave of his hand indicating the ruined city below. Astra looked down.
