Josh couldn't believe his eyes as Mrs. Smithson passed out money to
the class, in neatly wrapped bundles of five $100 bills and ten $20s. He
had never seen so much money before in his life, let alone thought
that his third grade teacher, who he couldn't stand and the feeling was
mutual, would be passing out cash before the first lesson of the day. Amazingly, the rest of the day was uneventful, although there were some rumors that a teacher had "robbed a McDonald's" late last night and was giving away the money. Josh Burbank and his 29 other classmates went home with a thousand bucks in their pockets, anxious to tell about how their teacher had done such a nice thing for them. Instead, in thirty houses or apartments on one side of the suburb they all lived in, the same scene took place: shocked or confused parents taking the wad of cash away from their children, and demanding to know where they got it, or how they got it, and why. Almost no one believed their childrens' stories about Mrs. Smithson handing it out before school started earlier that day. By dinner, Mrs. Smithson was being taken out of her townhouse in handcuffs.
