Fred had asked Belboz to upgrade his sword. Belboz granted this request,
turning the sword into a man whose touch meant instant death. Fred is
“Nice to meet you,” he says to Swordman, instinctive patting his new friend on the shoulder. “Oops.” Fred promptly dies.
”Oh, bother!” cries Belboz. “You won’t be able to slay the dragon in that condition.” Belboz begins chanting an ancient spell, and before long Fred’s corpse comes back alive!
But poor Fred isn’t the same. His mind is gone, and he is now a zombie! “Quuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh! Wuuuuuuuuuuuuuh!” says Fred.
Belboz turns to Swordman. “It is up to you to help Fred finish his quest. The two of you must slay the Dragon!”
”I accept this quest,” says Swordman, valiantly offering his hand in friendship to Belboz. Without thinking, Belboz accepts it…dying mid-shake.
”Not again!” shouts Swordman.
”Bluuuuuuuh!” murmurs Zombie Fred in agreement.
There is no restoring Belboz, since neither Swordman nor Zombie Fred are necromancers. Swordman scrounges up a few items around Belboz’s chamber and tethers Zombie Fred to him with a makeshift leash. “Let’s go.”
The pair continue down the corridor leading from Belboz’s chamber. They come to a rickety wooden bridge stretched over a river of molten lava. Guarding the bridge is an enormous man dressed in armor not entirely unlike Zombie Fred’s.
The man recognizes Zombie Fred almost immediately. “Fred, is that you? You old dog!”
Fred looks at the man. “Gruuuuuuuuuuuuuh!”
Swordman explains that Fred is now a zombie, but leaves out the details of how Fred died (not to mention his own special power).
The enormous man introduces himself. “My name is Lord Larry. I was Fred’s mentor after he graduated from knight school. I used to be a knight myself, but I took an early retirement from the king’s employ and went to work for the Dragon. The pay is great, the hours are better, plus there’s an excellent dental plan! Anyway, my job is to guard this bridge… so I’m afraid if you want to cross this bridge, you’ll have do duel me.”
”Very well,” says Swordman. “You seem like a nice enough chap, but we really do need to get through.”
